Artist Statement:

This sculpture reflects themes of conformity being similar to a cage. In our modern working society, what is ambiguous to the world is perceived negatively. Society does not like those who do not fit into the mold set for them. The outside of my box is meant to look unassuming yet mysterious, bland yet mystical. It has the energy of one who is unique or different, but not the appearance. It is hidden inside that plain looking dome that there will be a burst of color because underneath the surface of this unique soul is someone full of wonder. The objects kept hidden under the trap door communicate this youthful wonder through their bright colors and fun texture difference. This is the true baring of the soul hidden within a modern and boring world.

 

Notes:

The movie I chose was The Little Prince. 

There are many themes in this movie such as loss being a part of life, following your heart, and the value of imagination. I chose to hone in on the theme of childish wonder and fun being needed to live a fulfilling life. I particularly liked this quote from the movie, "Growing up isn't the problem, forgetting is."

The focal point of the movie is a girl being introduced to the concept of imagination through the story The Little Prince written by the aviator. Every time she reads the story, the movie scenes change to stop-motion animation with dry textures and bright colors. I wanted to incorporate these elements to show contrast between the inside and outside of my box. The outside; rough and dull, but the inside; colorful and more thick of a paint job.

The movie has many symbols throughout but three that gave me the strongest inspiration were the rose, the fox, and the little prince's planet. The rose of the story symbolizes individualism, uniqueness, and vanity. Uniqueness makes others easy to love in an otherwise dull life. The fox of the story symbolizes uniqueness in a different way however. The uniqueness that comes forth within connection and soul. Lastly, the planet is a symbol of loneliness. When the prince is on his planet, he is lonely, cold, and a working soul. All he has there is his rose, so he travels to Earth so he no longer has to be alone. These ideas are what I based my box off of: in a dull and boring life, one hides their uniqueness and individualism that they should not leave behind.

The overall shape I went for of the dome over the hidden objects was inspired by the rose encased in glass that dies towards the end of the movie, but also from the snow globes the main character receives for her birthday each year. A boring and dull gift that means really nothing to her childlike soul.
